The Business of Raising Capital: How United Capital Came to Lead Nigeria’s Debt Market

Nigeria Debt Market

Between January and September 2026, 45 institutions sponsored bonds and commercial papers on Nigeria’s fixed income market. United Capital sponsored more than any of them.

FMDQ’s Fixed Income Primary Markets Sponsors’ League Table ranks us Overall No.1 for the period, with ₦825.84 billion in bond listings and commercial paper quotations. In the third quarter alone, we accounted for 13% of all primary market activity and rose from 12th to 2nd in commercial paper quotations.

Behind each of those figures is a business that needed capital to grow, and a decision about how best to raise it. That decision is where our Investment Banking team’s work begins.

What sets our Investment Banking team apart

Every sponsor helps issuers reach the market. The difference lies in how well each deal is built.

Structuring built around the issuer. Our team starts with the business itself: its cash flows, its growth plans and its balance sheet. From there, we shape an instrument sized, priced and timed to fit those needs and to meet investor appetite. That care in structuring, carried through with disciplined execution, gives issuers confidence from mandate to listing.

Range across the market. This year’s mandates ranged from established names to companies coming to the market for the first time, across manufacturing, agriculture, technology, energy and consumer goods. Our rise in commercial paper reflects how many of these businesses now turn to us to fund their working capital.

Why a deeper market matters

A deep debt capital market serves more than issuers. It gives businesses an alternative to bank borrowing, widens the choices open to investors and puts domestic savings to work in productive enterprise. As more Nigerian companies look to the market to fund growth, the quality of the advice they receive matters more.

Leading the league table is a measure of the trust our clients place in us. We intend to keep earning it, deal by deal, with the same insight, structuring expertise and disciplined execution.
